Who are we?
We are a community of men, women and children, who were homeless but now live and work together to help ourselves while helping others in greater need than ourselves.
We are one of eleven Emmaus communities in the UK and 400 world-wide. Each community -from the first which started 50 years ago in Paris, to ours - welcomes people who would otherwise have no home, community or work, to come together to make a good home and to reclaim and recycle donated furniture, bric-a-brac, clothing, appliances etc.
These donated goods are either sold in our shop to generate income to sustain our community and support others, or are given to individuals and families to help equip a home or start work etc. In these instances we often look for an opportunity to exchange skills or resources rather than money.
We collect donated goods and undertake house, flat and office clearances. The people who collect the goods are the people who refurbish and sell them, and the same people who determine where the profits go. Every Emmaus community works to become financially self-supporting and to direct all surpluses to others in greater need.
The beautifully restored chapel now forms part of the sales space open to the public
Please contact us if you want to know more and/or are able to help us by donating items for which you no longer have a need.
