Missionary Co-operation

DIOCESAN DIRECTOR FOR MISSIONARY CO-OPERATION:

Rev. Richard Biggerstaff

Introduction

In canon law each diocese must ensure inter alia that “a priest is appointed to promote missionary initiatives, especially the ‘Pontifical Missionary Works’” (Canon 791, 2º).

In response to the gospel demand to preach the good news to all nations and to this canonical requirement in this diocese there is a Diocesan Director for Missionary Cooperation. As well as supporting the work of Arundel & Brighton diocesan priests working overseas through the annual collection for the Missionary Endeavour of the Diocese he also promotes the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies e.g. Association for the Propagation of the Faith (A.P.F.).

The Fund for the Missionary Endeavour of the Diocese

The Diocese holds an annual collection in support of overseas missionary work in poorer developing countries. The diocese maintains a close friendship, since 1981, with the Diocese of Chulucanas in the north of Peru. Since that time priests have been sent to work in this large and materially very poor Diocese. The Diocese of Chulucanas is almost wholly reliant on external financial support to care for the half million Catholic population. A significant part of this support comes through this annual Missionary Endeavour Collection. Other projects in other parts of the world may also be supported through this collection
