Deaneries in Canon Law
The particular church or Diocese of Arundel and Brighton is divided into parishes (Canon 374 §1) and these are grouped together into Deaneries or Vicariates Forane (Canon 374 §2) - the purpose of which is "to foster pastoral care by means of common action".
The criteria for the grouping of parishes include size, geography, schools, common pastoral responsibilities and the possibility of some joint pastoral action.
The "fostering of common pastoral action" which is described as the priority in Canon Law, is an area requiring further development and co-ordination in partnership with a growing number of lay people taking responsibility with the clergy in promoting all aspects of the mission of the Church.
Diocesan Norms
The Deanery Conference meeting is to have elements of prayer, in-service, business and socialising.
All deaneries are to meet at least six times a year (usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month). On four occasions there will be a set paper which should have a proponent and adequate time for discussion: The topics for discussion are a mix of local issues and Deanery Papers prepared by the Ongoing Formation Team.
The Agenda should reflect diocesan and deanery business, e.g. Council of Priests' items, Schools, Courses, the National Conference of Priests etc. Outside speakers may be invited to participate. Other meetings or gatherings of the presbyterate for prayer or business may also be organised.
Each Deanery nominates a priest as their delegate to the Council of Priests.
Agendas and Minutes
The Agenda is prepared by the Deanery Secretary (usually one of the Deanery clergy) in consultation with The Dean. The Secretary takes the minutes of the meeting and distributes them to those who attend to the meeting and the Vicar General.
The VG will bring appropriate items to the attention others as appropriate e.g. The Bishop.
Link to the Bishop
The Dean - who meets with the Bishop on a regular bais at the meeting of the Deans and privately.
Two Parishioners from each Deanery are nominated from accross the diocese to be on the Diocesan Pastoral Council
