St Mary of the Angels, Worthing, West Sussex
Pictures of St Mary of the Angels
Built around 1870 by Canon Purden, who was parish priest for some 50 years. The building was partly financed by the Gaisfords. The original church was rather smaller than the present day building, which was extended westwards in the 1930s. Further modifications were made by Monsignior Wall in the 1950s.
The modifications of the 1930s made the church rather long and narrow, so in the early 1980s the church was re-ordered, bringing the altar to the centre of the cruciform church, and adding the corona over the altar. By coincidence this returned the altar to the approximate position it had occupied in the original building.
More recently the church has had new stained glass and new lighting installed.
