Golden Jubilee of Arundel Cathedral Chapter and Canons
Bishop Richard Moth of the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton recently celebrated Mass at Arundel Cathedral for the Golden Jubilee of the Cathedral Chapter. Following the foundation of the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton, which covers all Sussex and most of Surrey, in 1965, two years later a Chapter of Cathedral Canons was erected.
The Mass on Monday 25th September was a great occasion as Bishop Richard was joined not only by the Canons of the Cathedral, but also Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark and Emeritus Bishop of Plymouth, Christopher Budd as well as Canons from Cathedrals in Southwark, Plymouth and Portsmouth Dioceses.
In his homily, he reflected that although the role of Cathedral Chapters has changed over the years, they nevertheless brought much wisdom and experience which was of great value to the Bishop and the Diocese.
The Chapter of Canons he said, “are to be a model for their brother priests and all the people of the Diocese, fixing their gaze firmly on the cross of Christ.”
The Mass was followed by a celebration in Arundel Cathedral Centre.
