Diocese Mourns Death of Two Priests
The Diocese is sad to announce the death of two of its priests. They are Fr Martin Breen, parish priest of St John the Evangelist, Tadworth on Wednesday 4th November and Fr Robin Mountford who was living in retirement on Monday 9th November.
Fr Martin Breen - His Funeral Mass was on Wednesday, 25th November 2015 at St. John the Evangelist, Tadworth.
Fr Robin Mountford - Vigil Mass: Wednesday 9th December 2015 at 7.30pm at Holy Cross Hospital Chapel, Hindhead Road, Haslemere GU27 1NQ. And then a Funeral Mass: Thursday 10th December 2015 at 12 noon at All Saints, Chichele Road, Oxted RH8 0AG. Biography Fr Martin Breen
Fr. Martin was born on 7th July 1933 and was educated in the CBS School, Co. Limerick, and the Thames Poly in Woolwich. He joined the De La Salle training college in Manchester and became a Brother, F.S.C. Among his teaching posts was one in Burma which ended at Independence.
Between January and June 1978 he studied for Priesthood at St. John’s Seminary, Wonersh before joining the Beda College in Rome, October 1978 – June 1981. On the 14th July 1981 he was ordained a Priest along with Canon Bill Davern by the then Bishop Cormac in the Parish Church of Hospital, Co. Limerick.
Following ordination he was appointed as Assistant Priest to St. Paul’s, Haywards Heath 1981-1984. The Sacred Heart, Caterham 1984-1985 and St. Joachim’s, Hampden Park 1985. His first post as Parish Priest was to St. Charles Borromeo, East Worthing 1985-1991 (on his Feast he died), Our Lady Queen of Heaven, Frimley 1991-2000.
Marking the Millenium he took a sabbatical at Marianella for the Pastoral Ministry Programme. On return he ministered as Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist, Tadworth from 2002 to his death on 4th November 2015.
The Diocese has lost a faithful, prayerful and gentle Priest – and a gifted golfer.
Biography Fr Robin Mountford
Fr. Robin was born on 27th December 1938 in Zimbabwe, Rhodesia and was educated in the Co-Ed School of Zimbabwe. He was received into the Catholic Church on 17th February 1958.
On 17th February 1963 he entered St. Joseph’s Theological Institute, Cedara, Natal, South Africa and spent 7 years studying for the Priesthood. He was ordained a Priest on 28th January 1970 in Johannesburg, S. Africa.
He was a priest in the Archdiocese of Pretoria and then moved to the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton in 1988 where he served in the parishes of Chichester and Burgess Hill. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton on 14th February 1991 and was appointed Parish Priest to St. Charles Borromeo, Worthing 1991-1994, and All Saints, Oxted 1991-1999. Due to ill health he retired in 1999.
The Diocese has lost a devoted priest and in the words of a priest who knew him well: “during his long illness he spent his time in prayer and reflection and spiritual growth”.
